Kim Reasor portrays the relationship between nature and urban sprawl in her landscapes. She mostly uses watercolor and gouache on paper, an ideal medium to use outdoors, but also paints with oils on canvas. In Pool Hours, Reasor contrasts dark, sloping hills with a Carribean-blue pool and empty deck chairs. The gated oasis is highlighted and detailed, unlike the large brushstrokes and thunderous sky of nature. We prefer to lock ourselves into a safe haven instead of venturing out into the natural expanse. Reasor does an excellent job portraying not only how large the natural world still is, but also exposes our habit of trying to separate ourselves from it, and by doing so, destroying that wild beauty.
