Artists from FIG create visual and critical responses to artworks by adults with developmental disabilities of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center. “Inspire/Respond” challenged partners to expand artistic horizons and methods, honoring the traditions of outsider art. The Feminist Image Group was formed in 2009. FIG is a coalition of visual artists who meet to discuss art, see exhibitions, and support one another’s careers. Artists work across many media, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation, digital media and performance.
As artists, FIG is concerned with how women continue to be portrayed in the art world. As teachers and feminists, they encourage students and colleagues to be alert to sexism in its many forms. FIG promotes an inclusive worldview that allows all voices. Previous exhibitions include “Women by Women” at the San Diego Art Department, 2010, and “What Women Want” at the Lyceum Theater Gallery, 2011, and “Feeder” at 4141 Garage, 2012.
